With the recent trends among phone manufacturers of integrating NFC technology in their devices, Samsung took the next step by introducing “TecTiles“, a sticker with embedded NFC tag which can be programed to do sort of any task in an attempt to popularize the Near Field Communication technology. This sticker can be adorn to your desk, furniture, car, walls windows or anywhere you feel you like to put it on.
Say you have wifi in your house but don’t want the hassle of telling all your guest your wifi password, using this sticker, program it with the task for an example automatic connect to your wifi and put it in the living hall wall. Once your guests arrived, they just need to tap their phone to the sticker (given they have NFC enabled phone) and automagically connected to your wifi.
Maybe you use your phone as navigation aid and want it to automatically started right after you enter the car. With the sticker on your dashboard, tap the phone and it can activate bluetooth in-car speaker, playing your favorite music and at the same time start Google Navigation for you.
All these can be done with just a sticker and an app of course which can be downloaded from their website. According to Slashgear, among the abilities these sticker has are:
Settings & Applications
• Change phone settings (Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, ringer/media volume, screen brightness, etc.)
• Launch an application
• Join a Wi-Fi Network
• Show a message
• Make a call
• Send a text message
• Start a Google Talk conversation
• Share a contact or business card
Location & Web
• Show an address on a map
• Open a web page
• Foursquare or Facebook check-in
• Automatic Facebook “Like”
• Update Facebook status
• Post a tweet or follow a contact on Twitter
• Connect on LinkedIn
One downside though, as much fun as to have this TecTiles sticker with your NFC enabled smartphone, word is it only compatible with Samsung’s NFC devices and it only available in the U.S. and Canada for $15 for a pack of five. While it should be made available soon to the rest of the year, it would be great if Samsung decided to enable this sticker to be used on any NFC enabled devices.
