How To Setup Unifi Home Networking For 3 Storey House

home network

Most of the posts on this blog usually about something new or tips and tricks but today I’m thinking to gather some feedback on something, something important, something that I’m not fully figure it out yet.

home network

Yes, I need some advice regarding setting up a clean home network. My house is a Semi-D type and I already applied for TM Unifi 20 Mbps Residential. My plan is to have the Broadband Termination Unit (BTU) and its Set Top Box (STB) on 1st floor, close to the TV area connected to my computer room which are on the 2nd floor.

My wired equipments are:

  • 2x Desktops
  • 2x NAS
  • 1x Media Player
  • 1x AiO Printer
  • 1x CCTV DVR
  • 3x VoIP Phones

My wireless equipments are:

  • 1x iPad
  • 3x Smartphones
  • 2x Laptops
  • 1x iPod
  • 1x Xbox 360

Choices of peropherals I might buy:

  • Mikrotik RB751G-2HnD
  • TL-SG1016D
  • Asus RT56U
  • TL-WDR4300

So far, what I have in mind is this. A dual-band router that can cover the whole 1st and probably 2nd and 3rd floor, and I would want to have an additional AP on the 2nd floor is just to strengthen the signal and cover some blind spots and 3rd floor.

I made an enquiry in Lowyat Forum about this and based on the feedback from there, this is how my setup would looks like:

First Floor
|-Asus RT56U/TL-WDR4300 (4 ports) 192.168.300.1
..|-SmartTV (wifi) 192.168.300.2
..|-Popcorn Hour A210 Media Player (eth) 192.168.300.3
..|-STB IPTV (eth) 192.168.300.4
..|-Xbox 360 (wifi) 192.168.300.5
Second Floor
..|-TL-SG1016D (16 ports) 192.168.300.6
….|-2x NAS (eth) 192.168.300.7/8
….|-CCTV DVR (eth) 192.168.300.9
….|-2x PC (eth) 192.168.300.10/11
….|-TL-WR1043ND (4 ports) 192.168.400.1
……|-AiO Printer (wifi) 192.168.400.2
……|-1x SmartTV (wifi) 192.168.400.3
BTU — MainRouter —|Concealed Cat5e/6|— Switches(TL-SG1016D) —|Cat5e|— AP (TL-WR1043ND)

So, will this be good enough for my network?Do you have something to say about this setup?

Appreciate if you guys can drop a few suggestions in the comment section below. Most liked comments will receive a travel router by TP-Link TL-WR702N.

Revised the setup based on the feedback gotten from LYN Forum.

  1. Update with new hardware:

    ..| Asus RT56U/TL-WDR4300 (4 ports) (wifi AP)
    ..|-SmartTV (wifi)
..|-Popcorn Hour A210 Media Player (eth)
    ..|-STB IPTV (eth)
    ..|-PS4 (wifi)
    Second Floor
    ….|-2x NAS (eth)
    ….|-CCTV DVR (eth)
    ….|-2x PC (eth)
    ….|-TL-WR1043ND (OpenWRT – port#1 for HyppTV)
    ……|-AiO Printer (wifi b/g)
    ……|-1x SmartTV (wifi)

    Replaced TP-Link TL-SG1016D with Mikrotik RB2011UiAS and TP-Link TL-WR1043ND with Mikrotik RB750GL

  2. Do you have any pics of your set up?

I am very interested as I am also planning something for a 3 storey semi-d, did your set up work as planned?

Did you change anything and if you could start over or change something what would you change?

    Any advise?
